American Attack on Caracas Fuels Fears of Future Greenland Acquisition.

Recent American bombardment in Venezuela and the detention of its leader have ignited worry regarding America's designs on the Arctic territory. Supporters of the former president's base have allegedly focused on the resource-rich island following the operations in South America.

Provocative Messages and Official Backlash

Only a short time after the initiation of the Venezuelan campaign, a prominent right-wing podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking White House aide, shared a symbolic map. The picture depicted Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, accompanied by single-word message: "COMING."

This blatant threat to claim the resource-abundant region, which is a part of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked swift and strong condemnation from Denmark's officials.

"We are strong partners and should keep work together as such. American security is also the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the US work together to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The diplomat further pointed out that Denmark had significantly boosted its military budget recently, allocating a substantial sum expressly for Arctic and regional defence. "And yes, we demand complete recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Administrative Moves and Strategic Interests

The situation were further exacerbated by the recent naming of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had publicly thanked the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "honour" to work in a unpaid capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

Following the military action in Venezuela, this representative commended the administration's actions, linking it to the broader "war on drugs."

Since assuming office, the US president has repeatedly alarmed European partners with his stated desire in Greenland. The territory is viewed as critically important for national security and potential resource extraction. It currently houses the northernmost US air base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a notable television interview, the president declined to exclude the use of military force to acquire Greenland. This position comes during growing great-power competition in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Tensions and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this constant "drumbeat" of intent, Danish security agency took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland issued a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a nuanced sentiment. While a vast majority of the territory's residents seek independence from Denmark, there is also scant desire to become part of the United States. The island has had the option to declare sovereignty for many years.

Analyst View: A Plausible Threat?

Military analysts are increasingly reconsidering the likelihood of such a move. One thinktank analyst specializing in military analysis conceded she had previously discounted the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a couple hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's not clear to me who could do anything about it," she concluded.
